New CWGC Commemorations - 21^st April 2026¶

Some more brilliant news today that a Welsh serviceman who died in WW2 has been accepted by the CWGC for commemoration, as a result of my work. Daniel Eric Butters, of Carmarthen, served with the RAF and died on 23 July 1944. Evidence of his burial at Carmarthen Cemetery has also been sent in, so hopefully he will be duly honoured with a CWGC headstone at some time in the future. New CWGC Commemorations - 18^th December 2025¶

Some more great news today that another of my uncommemorated cases has been accepted for commemoration by the CWGC:

Henry Charles Thomas Gibbs, Lance Corporal, 28521, Welsh Regiment. Henry was born on 5 May 1897, the son of Thomas Gibbs and Elizabeth Gibbs (nee Roberts), of 38, Bloy Street, Easton, Bristol. He worked as a labourer prior to enlisting into the Welsh Regiment at Bristol on 19 April 1915, attesting for the 18^th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, a Bantam Battalion, joining the battalion at Porthcawl the following day. On 31 March 1916 Henry was transferred to the 22^nd Welsh, a training reserve battalion, becoming promoted to Lance Corporal before being drafted to France on 15 June 1916, joining the 14^th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, the Swansea City Battalion. The 14^th Welsh was attached to 114 Brigade, 38^th (Welsh) Division and was on the Somme by the time Henry arrived, preparing to launch its first assault on Mametz Wood. Henry survived the carnage at Mametz Wood, and moved with the division to the Ypres Salient later that summer, where it took up positions along the canal bank at Boesinghe. Henry was shot in the face in September, but soon recovered, however he took ill during his first winter in the trenches and was diagnosed as suffering from heart disease before being invalided home in January 1917. He was discharged from the army as medically unfit on 31 May 1917 and returned home to Bristol. Sadly his health never recovered and Henry died at Bristol Royal Infirmary on 28 April 1919, of heart disease contracted on active service. He was buried in Greenbank Cemetery, Bristol. Henry had today, 18 December 2025, been accepted for commemoration by the CWGC following a direct application from myself. He will be commemorated in the United Kingdom Book of Remembrance at Maidenhead until the location of his grave is verified.

New CWGC Commemorations - 16^th December 2025¶

Some great news today. Firstly news was received direct from the CWGC that one of my cases had been accepted for commemoration by them: Thomas Mills, Private, 15559, King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, of Manafon, Montgomeryshire; then news was received from the In From the Cold Project that a further two of my cases which had been submitted through them, had been accepted: John Ellis, Pioneer, 111601, Royal Engineers, of Swansea; and John Jones, Stoker, 8279(S), Royal Naval Reserve, of Dunvant, Swansea. Some great news this week, that another seven Welsh servicemen have been accepted by the CWGC for commemoration as war casualties, as a result of my research. The men are: John Thomas Davies, South Wales Borderers, of Builth Wells; William Edenden, South Wales Borderers, of Risca; Thomas Benjamin Evans, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, of Cwmann, Lampeter; Martin Flynn, Royal Naval Reserve, of Swansea; Ivor James Nelmes, Royal Navy, of Oakdale; and Arthur Harold Parkes, Royal Naval Reserve, of Swansea.

New CWGC Commemorations - 30^th May 2025¶

Some great news today about another one of my cases being accepted for commemoration by the CWGC. Rhys Havelock Roderick, from Cilycwm, died on 15 July 1921 of tuberculosis contracted on active service, yet had been overlooked for commemoration by the CWGC.

Amroth War Memorial - 4^th May 2025¶

With recent news that Amroth Church is closed, the community of the village have moved the war memorial from the Church to the village hall. The memorial commemorates the villagers who fell during the Great War. There is no memorial for WW2 in the village, so I have identified a number of men from Amroth who fell in the latter war and have added them to the website here: Amroth War Memorial

Three amendments to the CWGC database - 4^th May 2025¶

Finally getting around to carrying out some updates to the website! I've recently received confirmation that three cases which I submitted to the CWGC have been adjudicated upon and resulted in corrections being made to the details for three fallen servicemen.

The cases are:

David Alexander, Private, 3876, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. David was born in 1891, the son of Alexander Alexander and Johanna Alexander (nee Lee), of 19, Well Street, Swansea. By 1911 his father had died, and David lived with his grandmother Ellen Lee at 33, Convent Street, Swansea. He worked as a furnaceman prior to enlisting into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, under the alias of David Lee and married Cecilia Griffiths at Swansea soon afterwards. David was drafted to France soon afterwards, disembarking on 2 November 1914, before being posted to the 1^st Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, which was in the Ypres Salient, attached to 22 Brigade, 7^th Division. The division had been decimated during the First Battle of Ypres, where it helped save the city from being overrun and following the closure of the First Battle of Ypres, the 7^th Division moved to positions near Neuve-Chapelle. David was badly wounded during the end of January 1915 and he died of his wounds on 30 January 1915. The 24-year-old has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium. Ever since his death, David was commemorated under his alias, David Lee, however as a result of my research, I was able to present a case to the CWGC, who accepted his real name in April 2025 and have amended their database to illustrate this.

Evan Lloyd, Private, 8301, Dorsetshire Regiment. Evan was born in 1880, the son of Thomas Lloyd and Anne Lloyd (nee Williams), of 25, Edmund Street, Ystradfodwg. His father died when he was young and his mother remarried to Thomas Evans, so the family moved in with Thomas at 1, Herwain Cottage, Tylorstown. Evan worked there as a colliery hauler prior to enlisting at Ferndale into the army and was posted to the Somerset Light Infantry, with the service number 12541. He was drafted to France on 13 May 1915 and posted to the 1^st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment, his number changing to 3/8301. The battalion was attached to 15 Brigade, 5^th Division, but transferred to 95^th Brigade in the 32^nd Division in December 1915. Evan served with the battalion until July 1916, when he was transferred to the 5^th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment, which had just arrived in France following service in Gallipoli as part of 50 Brigade, 17^th (Northern) Division. Evan was killed in action on the Somme shortly afterwards, on 26 September 1916. The 36-year-old has no known grave, so is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Since his death he has been commemorated under the name Lloyd Evans, however after presenting my research to the CWGC to prove his name as being Evan Lloyd, the CWGC have recently adjudicated that this was his correct name, and in February 2025 their database was amended to recognise this.

Richard John Jones, Private, T2/015722, Royal Army Service Corps. Richard was born on 8 April 1892, the son of Richard Edmund Jones and Mary Ann Jones, of 5, Lewis Terrace, Llanbradach. He worked as a miner at Trealaw prior to enlisting into the Army Service Corps at Cardiff on 7 October 1914 and was posted to Aldershot, joining the 19^th Divisional Train, which was attached to the 19^th (Western) Division, a New Army division. Richard embarked for France with the division on 16 July 1915 and upon disembarking the following day, the division moved to positions north of Loos in the Givenchy area, to begin trench initiation and training. Richard was enjoying a night off duty with some comrades in Bethune on 12 September 1915 when he fell into the River Lys and drowned. The body of the 25-year-old was recovered and he was buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg L'Avoue, France. He was originally commemorated by the CWGC, and on his headstone, with the incorrect service number (T2/01572) and date of death (16 September 1915), however after presenting my research to the CWGC, they have since accepted these facts and in February 2025 they amended his details on their website. His headstone will be amended in due course.

Some more great news today, that another six Welsh servicemen have been accepted for commemoration by the CWGC as a result of my work: Frederick Robert Crimp, of Penarth; Albert Davies, of Cwmdare; Andrew Davies, of Skewen; John Charles Davies, of Pontlottyn; Thomas Davies, of Kinnersley; and William John Davies, of Porthcawl. Unfortunately, one of my cases was rejected today: Bertie Somerville Cozens, of Monmouth.

Updated Carmarthen Town WW2 memorials - 22^nd November 2023¶

The latest updates on the website are for all of the Carmarthen Town WW2 memorials. Due to the release of extra information on Ancestry lately, as well as information sent in by relatives, I've been able to update and amend these memorials, and been able to correct several errors of my own making. As time permits, I'll work my way through all of the other memorials which I originally put on the website some years ago and update them all also. Please watch this space!

Some more great news this week. The CWGC announced some 160 new commemorations on 22 November, which included five Welsh servicement who I had researched and put forward for commemoration.

I received some well overdue news today that another eleven Welsh servicemen have been accepted for commemoration by the CWGC as a result of my research: Rees Davies, of Llanelli; Harold Edwards, of Aberbargoed; Robert Lewis, of Holyhead; Albert Lowne, of London (SWB), Pryce Richards, of Forden, Welshpool; John Charles Russell, of Roath, Cardiff; Thomas George Smith, of Canton, Cardiff; John Lewis Thomas, of Blaenavon; William John White, of Sebastopol; John Howard Williams, of Newport, Mon.; and Thomas Williams, of Gelligaer. Additionally, one other Welsh soldier was accepted for commemoration, who had been researched and put forward for adjudication by Hywyn Williams, another volunteer for the IFCP: Private Albert Evans Parry, 53866, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, of Carnarvon.

New CWGC Commemorations - 12^th March 2022¶

The dedication service for the new headstone for Second Lieutenant Sam Hughes, of the 10^th Welsh, was held in France this week. I came across Sam's grave, to an Unknown Welsh Regiment Second Lieutenant, some ten years ago, and it has taken this long to get  him through the system and have a named headstone on his grave. Whilst verifying my research, the MOD 'War Detectives' team identified the grave besides his as a fellow soldier of the 10^th Welsh. New CWGC Commemorations - 21^st October 2020¶

I was pleasantly surprised to get this in the post today from Anthony Williams, of Milford Haven. It's based on the WW2 Pembrokeshire War Memorial information from my website, so obviously commemorates all of the men and women of the county who fell during World War Two. It's a huge book and well worth a place on the bookshelf of anybody from the Pembrokeshire area!

New CWGC Commemorations - 16^th August 2020¶

Work is now complete in adding all of the war memorials of west Wales: Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire, and over 50 more pages have been added, compared to the old website.

Not that I have unlimited pages, I will start adding details of war memorials from other Welsh counties.

The first will be the smaller, rural, counties of Breconshire, Radnorshire, Merionethshire and Montgomeryshire. Work will be slow, but as I research and write up each memorial, they will be uploaded onto the website.
