The Crimean War, which took place from October 1853 until February 1856, marked the forging of an alliance of France, Britain, Turkey and Sardinia against Russia, and was originally brought about because of a clash of interests involving the right of Christians in the Holy Land. The war is seen as the first ‘modern’ war, involving such pioneering sciences as railways and telegraph communication, and also became famous for the pioneering work in medicine which was mainly due to the efforts of nurses such as Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. The war was widely publicised in period newspapers and books, and gripped the people of Britain.

War erupted in the Black Sea between Russia and the Ottoman Empire in October 1853 over Russia’s rights to protect Orthodox Christians. The Russians destroyed the Ottoman fleet at the port of Sinope, and to stop Russia gaining further supremacy over the ailing Ottoman Empire, France and Britain entered the war in March 1854. Most of the fighting took place for control of the Black Sea, with pitched battles on the Crimean peninsula in southern Russia, one such famously being the ill fated Charge of the Light Brigade. The Russians held their great fortress at Sevastopol for over a year, and repelled several attacks before it fell, leading to peace in March 1856.

Among the regiments involved with the British was the famed 23rd Regiment of Foot, known today as the Royal Welch Fusiliers. The regiment took part in both of the great assaults on Sevastopol, The Battle of the Alma, at Inkerman, and also in the Battle of Balaclava, which saw the famed Charge of the Light Brigade. The campaign took a heavy toll on the 23rd Regiment, seeing it lose 754 officers and men, 530 through disease.

The Regiment embarked for the Crimea aboard the Steam Ship Trent in April 1854, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Harry George Chester. Chester was killed during the Battle of the Alma on 20 September 1854, and command devolved onto Major (later General) Daniel Lysons. He commanded the Regiment throughout the remainder of the campaign, becoming wounded himself during the storming of the Redan on 18 June 1855.

Carmarthen Crimean Monument

After the remnants of his Regiment returned to Britain in July 1856, Lysons set about gathering support to build a monument to commemorate the fallen. His efforts culminated in the decision to erect the monument in Carmarthen, at the time considered to be the spiritual birthplace of the Regiment.

His work began with an open letter to Carmarthen, which was read out during a meeting of the Town Council:

‘Dover, 31st July, 1857.

Sir,- ‘With reference to a letter I received from you in June, 1855, I have now the honour to inform you that the Officers of the 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers have commissioned me to undertake the erection of a monument to the Officers and Soldiers of that Regiment who fell during the late War, It is the wish of the Officers that the proposed Memorial should be placed in some open space in Carmarthen, and that it shall bear the names of all the officers, non-commissioned officers, and privates, who were killed or who died of disease in the field during the war; so that any person at any time, may find thereon inscribed the name of any lost friend or relation. If you can give me any assistance in this undertaking, the Officers of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers will feel much indebted to you for your kindness. I propose being in London on Monday next, and shall go on to Carmarthen on Tuesday, when I shall do myself the honor of waiting upon you.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your most obedient humble servant,

D. LYSONS, Colonel, Commanding 25th King’s Own Borderers, Late 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers.’

The idea was unanimously agreed upon, but months of wrangling then followed, with varying locations coming into consideration for the monument to be erected in the town. The final location, situated midway along Lammas Street, at the junction with Water Street proved controversial at the time, but was eventually agreed upon in June 1858.

In the meantime, work on creating the monument, designed and made by the sculptor Edward Richardson of London, became underway, and in July 1858 sections of the newly crafted Portland stone obelisk arrived by rail at Carmarthen station. Work to build the monument began immediately, under the supervision of Mr. Weekes of Carmarthen, while arrangements for its inauguration also began. The date decided upon was the fourth anniversary of the Battle of the Alma, Monday 20 September 1858.

The monument was created in Gothic style, with a gilded plume of feathers finial crowning the obelisk, which was inscribed with the Regimental Battle Honours, ‘Minden’, ‘Egypt’, ‘Corunna’, ‘Martinique’, ‘Albuera’, ‘Badajoz’, ‘Salamanca’, ‘Vittoria’, ‘Pyrenees’, ‘Nivelle’, ‘Orthes’, ‘Toulouse’, ‘Peninsula’, ‘Waterloo’, ‘Sebastopol’ and ‘Crimea’. Beneath is a square plinth inscribed with the Crimean Battle Honours, ‘Sebastobol’, ‘Alma’, ‘Redan’ and ‘Inkerman’, which is set on an octagonal base, was inscribed: ‘Crimea’ on the front face, ‘Nil Aspera terrent’ on the right, ‘Ich Dien’ on the left and ‘Trenches’ on the rear. This octagonal section stands on the chamfered top of a broad square pedestal with panels inscribed with the individual names of the fallen respectively at Alma, Redan, Inkerman, and the Sebastopol trenches, and the un-named 526 non-commissioned officers, drummers and private soldiers who died of disease. The marble panels sit in borders with Gothic flowers in borders, and were added in May 1861, after being again commissioned by Major Lysons.

A captured Russian cannon was donated to the town in November 1859, after the inauguration of the monument, and this bronze gun can be seen in the early photograph above. The gun was later removed, as was the twin headed lamp-post in the photograph. Cast iron railings, in the form of crossed rifles, surround the monument.

General Daniel Lysons

The following are the known casualties suffered by the 23rd Regiment of Foot during the Crimean campaign. The list has been compiled from several contemporary sources, most notably The Times casualty lists. Unlike WW1, in earlier campaigns the majority of casualties who died of sickness and disease were not reported, so many are missing from this list.
