Laid down on 4 January 1897, HMS Goliath was one of six Canopus-class pre-dreadnought battleships, designed and built for service in Asia, and was 421 feet long and 74 feet wide, displacing 13,150 tons. The Canopus-class ships were smaller and faster than the preceding Majestic-class battleships, but retained the same battery of four 12-inch guns, mounted in twin turrets fore and aft. They also carried thinner armour than the Majestic-class, which was of the new Krupp design.
Goliath was launched on 23 March 1898, and commissioned into the fleet in March 1900 before being deployed to the China Station until 1903, when she returned to Britain. She was initially sent back East Asia but was reassigned to the Mediterranean Fleet whilst en-route. In early 1906, she was transferred to the Channel Fleet, followed by a stint in the Home Fleet starting in early 1907. She was sent to the Mediterranean a second time in 1908, and later returned to the Home Fleet in 1909, before being mothballed in 1913 and posted to the Nore Reserve at Pembroke Dock. As a result of her stationing at Pembroke Dock, many members of her crew were Welsh.
With the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, Goliath was mobilised into the 8th Battle Squadron. She initially served as a guard ship in Loch Ewe, one of the harbours used by the Grand Fleet, before escorting the crossing of elements of the BEF to Ostend in late August.
On 20 September 1914 Goliath transferred to the East Indies to support convoys transporting large numbers of Empire troops and supplies. She then took part in the hunt for the German light cruiser SMS Königsberg, which had sunk the cruiser HMS Pegasus, however following the Royal Navy’s defeat at the Battle of Coronel on 1 November, the Admiralty sent Goliath to South Africa, to protect the colony from the possibility of a German attack. During the voyage Goliath suffered engine problems, so proceeded for repairs before heading back to blockade the SMS Königsberg.
The German ship had anchored in safety in the Rufiji delta, which was too shallow for Goliath to enter, so she proceeded to bombard the German garrison at Dar es Salaam. Goliath’s Executive Officer, Commander Henry Ritchie, won the Victoria Cross during the action. Further bombardments took place upon the German held Lindi, but on 25 March 1915 Goliath received orders to proceed to the Mediterranean to assist with the forthcoming operations to force the Dardanelles.
Goliath joined the First Squadron upon her arrival, under Rear Admiral Wemyss and was tasked with supporting the landings at Cape Helles on 25 April 1915. She took up a position off Y Beach and throughout the day shelled the Turkish positions, in conjunction with the seven other battleships and four cruisers of the First Squadron.
On the following morning a large number of wounded men were evacuated to the ships anchored off-shore. Goliath took a number of men aboard and during the operation sustained some damage from Turkish coastal artillery.
While the fighting on the Gallipoli peninsula was raging, Goliath continued to support the troops ashore, shelling Turkish positions around Krithia, but was hit by Turkish fire again on 2 May.
By the second week of May, the Allies had developed a rotation of two battleships on station off Gallipoli every night to support the troops dug in on the peninsula. On the night of 12–13 May, Goliath was on station with the battleship Cornwallis, both anchored in Morto Bay, with Goliath ahead of Cornwallis. Five destroyers patrolled the area against any opportunist Turkish torpedo boats.
However, the Turkish destroyer Muâvenet-i Millîye managed to quietly slip past the destroyer screen and at just after 01.00 on 13 May 1915 launched three torpedoes at Goliath. The first two struck her, causing a tremendous explosion which caused her to roll over, then the third torpedo struck, sending Goliath to the seabed. The Turkish destroyer managed to flee unscathed.
Of her crew of around 750 men, 498 died in the sinking of Goliath on 13 May 1915, including her Captain, Thomas Shelford.
The wreck lies upside down at a depth of 207 feet, and is largely buried in sediment. Only part of the hull, which was badly mangled by the explosion, and one of her screws are visible. The wreck has recently been surveyed by the famous ocean explorer, Bob Ballard and was one of the ships featured in a TV series about the wrecks of Gallipoli.
Three of her crew had died before her sinking, while at least one survivor was killed on another ship later in the war. One more man whose father was killed during the sinking of Goliath was killed on another ship towards the end of the war. All are commemorated in the roll of honour below:
